What is Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

Neuromuscular Massage is a form of soft tissue manipulation that aims to treat underlying causes of chronic pain. It involves the muscular and nervous system through trigger point release therapy. Trigger points create a referral pain pattern that does not always in fact usually never relates to where pain is felt. That is because the body is interconnected, when you feel a nagging ache or a dull pain it is being stimulated by the pain pattern. In order to release the pain there is a series of muscles that need to be released before the pain is gone.

Neuromuscular massage is not a feel good type of massage. Clients should always be relaxed and never tensing their muscles, when muscles tighten it is counterproductive to achieving their goals. On a scale of 1-10 of pain a 6 is a happy medium.

Daily activities, repetitive movements, sleeping, stress, tight clothes, injuries and many more things create trigger points in the body. A trigger point is a taut part of the muscle usually in the belly of the muscle but can be found at the attachment site of the muscle which causes that dull ache or nagging pain. There can also be multiple trigger points in one muscle at any given time.

Neuromuscular massage also increases blood flow, improves range of motion, Improve your performance in physical activities, decreases your risk of injuries, helps your joints move through their full range of motion, enables your muscles to work most effectively, improves your ability to do daily activities. Similarly what stretching does to the body.

Stretching also helps improve the elastin in your muscle fibers that allows your body to glide through range of motion and muscle strengthening. Without stretching the body becomes locked in and unable to reach its full range of motion allowing for movement restrictions, inability to push yourself at the gym, unable to be comfortable in your body, waking up with stiffness, having fatigue. Stretching increases all of the above and gives you a better quality of life.
